Selecting Silicon: Why Parents Choose Cybercharter Schools

In 2008, 41 states in the United States had created charter school laws. Charter school laws provide the guidelines for creating independent public schools by educators, parents, community leaders, or educational entrepreneurs. The basic goal of charter schools is to create better educational opportunities for students. These schools provide an alternative education for students who want to be in public schools, but do not wish to or cannot attend their traditional school due to barriers impacting their attendance. Charter schools have brought one of the most interesting and innovative of charter school varieties: the online charter school. In thinking about the possible skills that can be built within online charter schools, the future of technological innovation can be seen through the case of cybercharters. What can explain why parents choose a virtual charter school for their children? Particularly interesting in this question is why would home schooling parents, whose politics and decisions tend toward the conservative, embrace an innovative and untested form of learning for their children? In this article, the authors present a study exploring the reasons for home schoolers to choose an online charter school. This study will help anyone interested in improving education to see clearly, from a parent's perspective, what the public schools may be missing that online charters are offering. The authors found that parents had three primary reasons for their decision: (1) customization; (2) finances; and (3) potential for changing the system. (Contains 1 footnote.)
