Arizona Traffic Safety Education, K-3. Pedestrian Safety, Grade 3.
Mesa Public Schools, AZ.
One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide contains nine lessons on pedestrian safety for use in grade 3. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes basic highway safety concepts, stressing communication methods for highway users, visibility and judgmental problems, predictability of behavior, and the pedestrian environment; instructions for using this program, explaining evaluation methods; and Arizona law governing pedestrians. The lessons cover the following subjects: the safest route between home and school; traffic signs, signals, and symbols; traffic laws and rules; traffic hazards for pedestrians; special situations such as driveways, shopping centers, bad weather, and different times of day; crossing guards; manners; emergency situations; and the danger of strangers. For each lesson a complete plan is provided, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested basic and enrichment activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. The types of activities include coloring and drawing, learning poems and songs, class discussions, and simulations of pedestrian situations. (ELG)
