Making Schools Safe for Students: Creating a Proactive School Safety Plan.
Blauvelt, Peter D.
This guide offers strategies for creating a proactive school safety plan that encourages parents, teachers, principals, and students to take the initiative and identify threats to school safety. It emphasizes that schools must have an active plan that addresses fights, name calling, bullying, changes in kid's behaviors, and staff who have run out of strategies for coping with at-risk students. It discusses national trends in school violence and the need for administrators to know what is happening in their schools daily. It supplies tips on incident profiling and describes the different categories of offenses that should be employed for incident profiling to succeed. The text outlines board of education policies and the need for administrators to comply with them. It offers various strategies for dealing with crimes against persons, including assault and battery, extortion, robbery, sex offenses, trespassing, and weapons. It then discusses tips for dealing with crimes involving property, such as arson, bomb threats, larceny, and vandalism. Separate chapters give advice on security resources, search and seizure, creating a "Schools Against a Fearful Environment (S.A.F.E.) Team", dealing with violence in the workplace, the elements of an emergency management plan, an emergency management checklist, and new ideas. (RJM)
