This paper presents the author's comments on the Michigan sex offender registration article "Family Experiences of Young Adult Sex Offender Registration" (Comartin, Kernsmith, & Miles, 2010). The article is an important piece of research that addresses a much neglected and almost invisible population in the annals of research: the families of young adult sex offenders. The mothers interviewed in the study raise an interesting ethical concern--should adult sex offender laws be applied to individuals who were not adults when they offended? The qualitative methodology of the study appears to have been well planned and executed. The findings give a good sense of the varied opinions, albeit common experiences, and emotions of the mothers of young adult offenders who were adjudicated as juveniles. This study of the families of young adult sex offenders is a beginning step to identifying the characteristics and needs of offenders whose sexually offending behaviors are not entrenched. Such research can help educate the public and professionals in the field that not all sex offenders are the same and that interventions meant to protect the community and prevent victimization are most effective when tailored to the needs of each offender and commensurate with his or her level of risk.
