Schools in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) school system have experienced an enrollment decline of more than 25% over the past 30 years. A wide range of anecdotal explanations for this decline are shared by SDA members of the constituency as well as many views about ways to reverse the decline. There is little empirical data, however, to provide those who lead the SDA school system with an understanding of what aspects the constituents consider important. Research from the school choice movement indicate that reasons cited most often by parents for choosing public and private schools were academic preparation and convenience. Research also indicates that parochial schools were more often chosen for religious reasons which allowed for a family's values to be transmitted to the next generation. This quantitative study reports on a survey of constituents in Northern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (NCC) investigating four major aspects and their importance to SDA education. Statistical analysis of the data showed that the order of importance of those four aspects was the following: academic standards, school climate, religion, and finances/convenience. The order of importance did not vary either with frequency of church attendance or generation of the constituent. Implications of this study suggested the necessity for schools to have an educational vision for a challenging academic program, for developing more consistent methods of communicating academic progress, and finding a better selection process for the hiring of teachers. The findings also indicated that while it is important that SDA schools include a religion curriculum aspect in their school programs a high academic standard and a positive school climate are of primary importance.
