Program Management Educational Needs of Idaho Business and Marketing Teachers
Kitchel, Allen; Cannon, John; Duncan, Dennis
Career and Technical Education Research, v34 n3 p175-189 2009
The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived program management professional development needs of Idaho secondary business/marketing teachers (N = 233) in order to guide pre-service curriculum development and in-service training activities. Sixty-two percent (n = 146) of the 233 teachers completed a modified version of Joerger's (2002) Needs Assessment instrument, which was based on Borich's (1980) Needs Assessment Model. Calculated means and standard deviations represent importance and competence ratings for each program management item, while Mean Weighted Discrepancy Scores (MWDS) inform the prioritization of in-service needs. Results showed that pre-service training priorities should address development of relationships with colleagues, provision of career guidance activities, identification of appropriate curriculum, and program related trends and current issues. Obtaining external funding, co-op/internship management, public relations, and developing curriculum-based school-to-work/career activities were priority areas for in-service program management needs of business/marketing teachers.
