Child's Play: A Sensory-Integrative Process.
Hartman, Jeanette Allison
In an attempt to demonstrate the direct relationship of physical play to sensory integration, this descriptive study measured fine and gross motor activities, and the repetition and duration of preferred activities among 179 children between 2 and 8 years of age who participated in 3 early childhood programs in California. Data were collected by means of videotape recordings, a sensorimotor checklist, and time samples. It was hypothesized that if children were provided ample time and a quality play curriculum, they would experience sensory integration in spontaneous play, and would seek out and repeat preferred activities. An extensive review of literature covered the topics of the ontogeny of sensory integration, sensory integration and the brain, play, quality play curriculum, sensory integration dysfunction, sensory integration therapy, sensory deprivation, sensory-perceptual-motor programs, and sensory-perceptual-motor studies. The sensorimotor checklist devised for this study included 9 fine and 13 gross motor activities and associated neuromuscular and sensory integration components. Results showed direct relationships between fine and gross motor activities and sensorimotor integration. Time samples of fine and gross motor activities showed correlations between repetition and duration. In general, children sought out and repeated preferred activities. (RH)
