Principals Preparing for Change: The Importance of Reflection and Professional Learning
Zimmerman, Judith A.
American Secondary Education, v39 n2 p107-114 Spr 2011
Given the demands and constraints under which they work, it is critical for principals to determine their own readiness for change before undertaking the complex process of changing schools. Leaders can discover their change readiness by becoming reflective practitioners who know themselves and engage in professional learning. This informed commentary article explores the impact of principals' behaviors, their attitudes toward change, and their self-efficacy on their change readiness. Using a scenario to set the stage, the author concludes that principals who expect teachers to take risks in learning and practicing new behaviors should demonstrate their own openness to change.
