Project Adapt: A Developmental Approach to Psycho-Motor Transfer. A Guide to Movement and Learning.
Steele, Wah-Leeta
Described is Project ADAPT (A Developmental Approach to Psychomotor Transfer), a validated program used with 808 primary grade children, some with learning difficulties, over a 3-year period to enhance academic readiness and self esteem through psychomotor training. An introductory project summary explains program objectives, the needs assessment procedures, program procedures, and evaluation results (all objectives met). Also noted is development by the project of assessment and instructional techniques for improving psychomotor skills. The program guide provides detailed information on setting up the program and instructional techniques. Contained in the section on screening is the ADAPT Movement Survey, intended to screen a class of 25 students in gross motor skills in about 20 minutes. Guidelines are given for using the survey for individualized programing. Approximately 10 activities are detailed for each of the following psychomotor areas: sensory motor, body awareness, balance-bilaterality, laterality and directionality, auditory perception, visual motor and hand and eye fine motor, form perception, and academic transfer. Each activity is described in terms of name, equipment needed, aim, procedure, variations, observations, and correction. A major section provides a sample program which includes information on class structure, a schedule of psychomotor areas to be emphasized and equipment to be used, a list of the necessary elements of the ADAPT lesson plan, 60 lesson plans, a criteria and evaluation schedule, a group evaluation chart, a list of home activities for parents, a list of equipment and vendors' addresses, a bibliography, and a list of tests.
