A Course of Study in English Language Arts for Grade Six.
Rochester Public Schools, Minn.
This last in a series of seven related teaching guides that together outline a public school district's English language arts curriculum for kindergarten through grade six focuses on a course of study for grade six. The guide explains the district's overall philosophy and teaching goals and the philosophy behind the development of a curriculum that emphasizes the importance of language arts as a process that should be interwoven with every curriculum area. Also presented are a curriculum diagram, a scope and sequence chart, and resources for the sixth grade teacher. The major part of the guide presents additional resources, activities, and teaching techniques that emphasize such concepts as perception, human relations, listening, writing, semantics and dialects, grammar, literature, composition, and the mechanical conventions of English. Extensive appendixes offer other resources, including a library program guide, suggestions for oral and written reports, a list of recommended films, spelling lists, a selection of teaching practices shared by teachers in the district, and a recommended booklist for reading to children. Also included is a large selection of diagnostic tests and answer keys for grade six. (AEA)
