Marquette University Department of Public Safety Implements New Command Information Center Technology
Cooper, Sue
Campus Law Enforcement Journal, v38 n1 p22-23 Jan-Feb 2008
Marquette University, established in 1881, is a private Catholic, Jesuit institution located in the heart of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The university has a student population of more than 11,000 and more than 2,000 faculty and staff. In its effort to continually improve crime prevention and emergency preparedness Marquette's Department of Public Safety recently completed the initial phase of installation of a new Command Information Center (CIC). The new CIC integrates new and existing cameras with alarm systems on the Marquette campus and off-campus neighborhoods to monitor suspicious activity. Marquette's CIC is key to its crime fighting efforts in two ways. First, the technology is helpful in spotting suspicious activity, enabling officers to respond and prevent criminal activity from occurring or, in some cases, apprehending suspects before or as a crime is occurring. Secondly, Public Safety officers can use this surveillance to identify suspects and apprehend offenders after an offense, and subsequently aid in the prosecution of these criminal cases in court.
