Essential Strategies for School Security: A Practical Guide for Teachers and School Administrators.
Haynes, Richard A.; Henderson, Catherine L.
This self-help guide explores the many factors involved in implementing an effective program of protection for schools. It provides direction and answers to the many questions posed by crime and violence in schools by translating certain principles of security into applications for the campus setting. The guide explains the various protection measures that are required for a thorough, comprehensive security program, while attempting to correct certain misconceptions about security in schools. It posits that a security program consisting of uniformed guards and closed-circuit cameras can still leave a school dangerously unprotected. A comprehensive program is needed, and the book shows officials how they can provide in-depth protection. Although schools may be victimized by the typical, everyday criminal events such as theft and vandalism, the threat of rampage violence demands they seek more effective solutions that will protect and prepare them for this spontaneous threat. The guide helps schools assess the security threats that confront them, explains the "what" and the "why" of the security measures they need, then outlines techniques, applications, and strategies associated with modern security. Security can coexist with an academic atmosphere, and with a program of protection in place, the business of education can continue because staff and students are reassured their safety is of utmost concern. Appendixes list various surveys and questionnaires, Web sites of security products, associations and organizations, incident reports, and security references sources. A glossary and illustrations are provided. (Contains 36 references.) (DFR)
