A Note to Young Immigrants
Perkins, Mitali
Teaching Tolerance, n28 p24-25 Fall 2005
In this article, the author discusses several things that young immigrants lose when they settle in a new land. These losses might entail the following: the ability to forget about race; language; the advantage of parents who can interpret the secrets of society; the stabilizing power of traditions; and the chance to disappear into the majority anywhere in a immigrant's new world. However, the author explains that young immigrants should not get discouraged as there are gains to offset the losses if they can manage how not to swallowed entirely by the changes.
