The use of music in facilitating second language (as well as first language) learning is supported by evidence that points to the musical nature of even preverbal infants. Music and language have been found to develop similarly, and researchers have noted advantages to using song in learning. The author observed her Korean 21-month-old for 10 weeks to study the child's ability to learn English words and lyrics from watching and listening to musical DVDs and CDs. Data from the observational period showed that the child progressively learned certain English words and songs from the musically related materials in part because the use of music motivated the child as well as kept her engaged throughout the learning process. The most effective musical components for facilitating second language learning were (a) simple, repetitive melodies and rhythms, and (b) lyrics with clear, concrete words that could be easily associated with and demonstrated by pictures and movements.
