Transcript of Audio Narrative Portion of: Scandinavian Heritage. A Set of Five Audio-Visual Film Strip/Cassette Presentations.
Anderson, Gerald D.; Olson, David B.
The document presents the transcript of the audio narrative portion of approximately 100 interviews with first and second generation Scandinavian immigrants to the United States. The document is intended for use by secondary school classroom teachers as they develop and implement educational programs related to the Scandinavian heritage in America. The interviews are presented in five chapters--emigration/immigration from Scandinavia, rural Scandinavian settlements, urban Scandinavian settlements, Scandinavian acculturation and assimilation, and Scandinavian ethnic retention. For each topic, experiences, impressions, recollections, and anecdotes are presented in the words of individuals who participated in the Scandinavian experience in America. Data is presented in the actual words of those interviewed. In addition, bridging narration and background information is presented on Scandinavian settlement in general and on the speakers and their families in particular. Emphasis throughout the transcript is on individual perceptions rather than historical accuracy. (DB)
