This publication was designed to assist chief school administrators, school nurses, school physicians, staff, and other school health personnel in developing, implementing, and evaluating sound school health programs for New Jersey public school students. Section I delineates responsibility for school health services, discussing the role of district boards of education, school nurses, school physicians, school nurse supervisors, dentists, and optometrists. Section II, on pupil health appraisal and assessment, discusses health appraisals and audiometric, tuberculosis, scoliosis, vision, and blood pressure screening. Immunization monitoring, observation of pupils with communicable diseases, first aid and emergency care, and administration of medication are addressed in Section III. Health supervison of school personnel is discussed in Section IV. Supervision of the environment is the topic of Section V, in which the physical environment, eye protection, emotional climate, and the health services office are discussed. Appendices present New Jersey statutes regarding school health, alcohol, and drugs; an admininstrative code regarding school health, safety, and physical education; and a list of nursing/health professional organizations, resources, and publications.
