Weekend Science Project
Santos, Karey
Science and Children, v49 n6 p54-57 Feb 2012
Weekend plans...every family has them. Whether it's fishing, swimming, or simply picnicking by the river, water plays a significant role in many recreational endeavors. Encouraging students and their families to use their "scientific eyes" to explore these wonderful wet places is what Weekend Science Project is all about. Weekend Science Project evolved in the author's classroom as an extension of their elementary school outdoor ecology lab. Using wasted space on campus, a small wetland area, observation platform, and freshwater pond were created. This outdoor lab provides an ideal location for a variety of scientific studies and is available to all teachers at their convenience. The site allows teachers to bring their classes outside to safely explore the big ideas in science as they relate to nature without having to leave the campus.
