In this article, the author acknowledges that tertiary education has remained relatively unchanged for centuries, delivering information to students through lectures, books, and laboratories where appropriate. However, new technologies are removing the need for traditional teaching because of better understanding of how people actually learn. We learn by taking information from the environment through our sensory inputs and memory into our working memory, and this combination of understanding with new technologies is resulting in the most revolutionary time in education since the invention of the printing press. Macknight uses this article to describe four fundamental steps that facilitate learning, as well as the difficulties faced in implementing change.
