Science: Course of Study Guide to Elementary School Science.
Anoka-Hennepin Independent School District No. 11, Coon Rapids, MN.
This course of study is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of an elementary school science program. In addition to high individual pupil achievement at each grade level, this program is also designed to provide a broad and comprehensive continuum of experiences that lead toward the obtainment of the identified science goals. A strong hands-on component is emphasized in this program. In addition, single topic books are provided to encourage pupils to pursue further inquiries into topics that interest them. The intended result is a "do-read" sequence that enables pupils to have concrete experiences prior to extending their understanding of the content through the use of print materials. A unit format was selected to allow maximum flexibility in building, teaching, and maintaining the elementary school science program. Each unit contributes to the educational outcome identified for the grade level and is the basis for further study at the next level. In this way, a scope and sequence is established and continuity in learning is promoted. Major themes for each grade level form the basis for this continuity. Many of the units incorporate activities from programs such as ESS, SCIIS, and SAVI/SELPH. Specific lesson plans, using the Elements of Instruction, were written by teams of classroom teachers to reduce planning time and teacher anxiety in teaching science. Section 1, "Foundations," includes K-12 learner outcome goals, content, processes and attitudes taught/developed, and a grade 1-6 outcome summary by domain. Section 2, "Science Instructional Program," includes the themes, concept maps, and objectives for each grade level. Section 3, "Environmental Education," includes guidelines, objectives, and resources. Sections 4 and 5 cover supplies and ordering equipment. Section 6, "Science Instruction," includes science fairs, safety, and instructional strategies. Section 7, "Sample Lessons"; includes three lessons for grade 1 and two lessons for grade 4. (KR)
