So, You Want to Host a Family Science Night?
Lundeen, Cynthia
Science and Children, v42 n8 p30-35 Jul-Aug 2005
With the exception of periodic science fairs or the occasional home-science project, science is not usually the galvanizing force for the school community. But, through family science events, it can be. It is no secret that students whose families are involved in their children's education significantly benefit in achievement, attitudes, and application. Academic and anecdotal research clearly indicates parent involvement is a critical predictor of children's school success (Lazar et al. 1999). But, often, as Tichenor (1998) asserts, "the greatest barrier to parental involvement is the lack of knowledge of schools and families on how to effectively work and plan together" (p. 248). Teachers and parents should not let that barrier hold them back any longer. Using the following template provided in this article as a guide, schools can host a successful family science event.
