The Road to Stress-Free Science Fairs
Carrier, Sarah J.
Science and Children, v44 n1 p36-39 Sep 2006
While few disagree that science fair projects have great potential for student learning, the preparation and execution of projects can be stressful for teachers, students, and parents alike. While working as a fourth-grade teacher, the author's goal was to provide students with a science fair experience minus the pressure of trying to figure out how to complete a project without prior experience. Instead of presenting science fair projects as a homework assignment a few weeks before the school fair as she had done previously, she wanted students to develop inquiry skills with science fair investigations in mind all year long. That way, by the time the science fair rolled around in May, her students would be comfortable with the processes involved in designing and implementing a science fair project. Much to the delight of the students' parents, the students completed their science fair projects in class and then presented them at a school fair that parents attended. It was a valuable strategy for students to learn about the inquiry process. Students learning about the inquiry process all year long allowed them to complete their science fair projects and also share the processes of each of the other projects done in class, multiplying the learning and the fun. In this article, the author shares the students' timeline for completing their science fair projects over the length of the school year. (Contains a list of 3 resources.)
