Preparing Future Principals to Work with School Counselors
Perusse, Rachelle; Haas, Eric; Lally, Ian; Mische, Sarah
AASA Journal of Scholarship & Practice, v5 n4 p39-48 Win 2009
Recent research shows that a developmental school counseling program can be an important tool for improving student academic achievement and school community well-being. Yet, it appears that school administrators do not take advantage of the school counseling resource, often assigning school counselors to tasks that are outside of their area of training or relegating them to clerical tasks, cafeteria and bus duty, or assigned disciplinary roles. In this article, the authors contend that principal preparation programs should more explicitly prepare preservice principals on how to include school counselors in the school improvement process. It is well established that school administrators play a central role in developing and maintaining effective, successful schools. Principal preparation programs that educate pre-service principals on how to expand distributed instructional leadership to include school counselors might improve the likelihood of their students leading effective, successful schools.
