Young Gifted Children: The Elementary Years
Shaklee, Beverly
Understanding Our Gifted, v16 n1 p3-5 Fall 2003
One of the most important experiences in a child's life begins when he starts formal school, most often at age 5. Going to kindergarten is thrilling and sometimes scary but always an adventure. At this time, children come together from all walks of life; all types of families; at all levels of development; and with a vast array of skills, dispositions, and attitudes. For some, it is the first time they are in a whole group of similar age-mates. For others, it's another milestone after several years of preschool. For parents and caregivers, it can be the first time they see their child in comparison to other children of the same age. Often questions arise regarding their child's level of cognitive development, social-emotional skills, and physical abilities. While gifted children have advanced attributes, they may also experience other development that is age appropriate or even delayed. Consistent or integrated sets of abilities and skills are often not seen until the late elementary years (e.g., ages 10 and older). This article describes the characteristics of younger children associated with the four areas of advanced development: (1) Exceptional Learner; (2) Exceptional User; (3) Exceptional Generator; and (4) Exceptional Motivation. It also discusses what parents should do once they have determined that their child has a pattern of abilities associated with giftedness.
