The SCAN-3 is a battery of tasks used for the screening and diagnosis of auditory processing disorder. It is available in two versions, one for children (the SCAN-3: C) and one for adolescents and adults (the SCAN-3: A); the latter version of the SCAN-3 is reviewed in this article, although it is very similar to the child version. The primary difference between the SCAN-3 and earlier editions is the SCAN-3's diagnostic use; earlier editions were meant for screening alone, whereas the SCAN-3 contains subtests for both screening and diagnostic purposes. The SCAN-3 has many attractive features: It is extremely easy to administer and score, and any speech pathologist or psychologist could administer the SCAN-3 with nothing more than a portable CD player and headphones. However, the SCAN-3 has a variety of limitations that make its use for high-stakes diagnostic decisions questionable. Although administration issues have received more attention in this revised edition, the variability in administration conditions continues to be a potential problem.
