Personalizing Distance Learning
Coombs-Richardson, Rita
Kappa Delta Pi Record, v43 n2 p71-75 Win 2007
This article discusses how a personal approach to online learning can yield a successful experience for adults earning advanced degrees or certification in teaching. Distance learning has become increasingly popular among learners with family and work obligations. Degree-seeking adult learners appreciate the flexibility and convenience of learning from their homes. Especially for those who would need to commute long distances to institutions of higher learning, education via the Internet has the appeal of saving time, relieving stress associated with traffic, and avoiding driving expenses. In this article, the author presents some distinctive features that successful distance learners share in their mode of study. She also discusses the distance learning program at Old Dominion University, and the "ESSE 413: Human Growth and Development" course in particular. (Contains 1 table.)
