A Rationale for Participant Evaluation

There are many different models or approaches to doing program evaluation. Fitzpatrick, Sanders, and Worthen classify them into five general approaches: (a) objectives oriented, (b) management oriented, (c) consumer oriented, (d) expertise oriented, and (e) participant oriented. Within each of these general categories, of course, reside many specific theories, models, and techniques. In this article the author presents a rationale for the use of what he calls "participant evaluation." Participant evaluation, as the name suggests, fits most closely to the general approach that Fitzpatrick et al. label participant-oriented evaluation, but it differs in many important ways from many of those specific models, as explained in this article.
