Education, v136 n2 p159-168 Win 2015
Goal: The aim of this study was to find the prevalence of speech (articulation, voice, and fluency) disorders among elementary school students from first grade to fourth grade. This research was based on the screening implemented as part of the Madrasati Project, which is designed to serve the school system in Jordan. Method: A sample of 1,231 (468 females and 380 males) from Grades 1 to 4, attending 8 primary schools in the city of Salt were considered in the present investigation. A checklist was completed by classroom teachers to specify students who were suspected of having speech difficulties. Based on the results of the checklists, 848 students underwent a preferential screening (which was implemented by 11 trained fourth-year speech pathology B.S. students) to identify students who present with speech difficulties (articulation, voice, or fluency disorders). Results: Based on the results, 136 (11.04%) students presented with speech disorders. Articulation disorders were the highest among the three speech disorders (7.06%), followed by voice disorders (4.22%), and fluency stuttering (1.38%). Conclusion: The results of this study guide early intervention in school age students and increase public awareness for teachers and parents.
