Selected presentations from a 1988 seminar on international trade hosted by Midland College (MC) are included in this report. Designed to direct west Texas businesses toward diversification and to prepare them for international trade and business opportunities, the seminar featured speakers in the field of international trade, including bank administrators, corporate presidents, and college professors. The six seminar presentations contained in this document are as follows: (1) "From Extraction to Education: Texas in Transition to an International Economy," by W. Michael Cox, which discusses the need for companies to move from purely domestic sales to international marketing; (2) "Small Business Administration in International Trade," by Joseph Pena, which reviews the reasons for limited involvement in international trade by smaller business; (3) "Export Now: The Challenge To Go International," by John A. Adams, Jr., which identifies U.S. export trends and investment opportunities and provides specific information for companies seeking to engage in international trade; (4) "Business Negotiations with the Japanese," by Kazuko Rowland, which discusses the important cultural differences to consider when negotiating with Japanese business people; (5) "European Economic Unification," by Toby D. Atkinson, which considers the economic unification of Europe planned for 1992 and the implications for U.S. trade; and (6) "Texas Export Opportunities with Mexico," by Rebecca Bannister, which reviews twin-plant (maquiladora) arrangements with Mexico, and describes mechanisms for businesses to increase product sales to Mexico.
