Arizona Traffic Safety Education, K-8. Grade 7.
Mesa Public Schools, AZ.
One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide for grade 7 deals with risk and choosing the safest action. (Based on the introduction to highway safety rules and laws that students have mastered in grades K through 3, the program for grades 4 through 8 emphasizes decision making, using good judgment, taking the safest actions, and the importance of obeying rules and laws.) Introductory information provided for the teacher includes instructions in using this program and an explanation of student evaluation methods. In the basic traffic safety lesson, risk is defined and related to various traffic safety concepts. In the other three lessons, risk is examined in relationship to bicyclists, pedestrians, and motor vehicle passengers. Risk situations are identified, and the student learns how to explain the dangers involved, to predict possible outcomes, and to determine safety techniques to avoid accidents. Each lesson contains a complete plan, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. Information sheets within the lessons list Mesa city ordinances, risk situations, traffic signs and symbols, state laws, and safety rules. (ELG)
