Noting the difficulties American adolescents have in finding answers to profound spiritual questions, this book examines how educators and parents of diverse backgrounds can unite to find ways to nourish spiritual development or invite soul into schools without violating the separation of church and state or deeply held beliefs of families and students. The book provides a theoretical framework stemming from adolescents' stories and questions, and a wide range of concrete activities to provide ordinary experiences that can nourish spiritual development. These activities are based on seven gateways to the soul of students: (1) yearning for deep connection; (2) longing for silence and solitude; (3) searching for meaning and purpose; (4) hungering for joy and delight; (5) feeding the creative drive; (6) transcending; and (7) needing initiation. The first chapter describes an approach to nourishing students' spiritual development and describes the theoretical framework. The following seven chapters each address one of the gateways, and includes students' questions related to the gateway, educators' and students' stories, discussion of spiritual development issues related to the gateway, and specific concrete activities for adolescents. The final chapter notes that traveling through the seven gateways to the soul of students yields many opportunities for honoring the yearnings of young people. The chapter also discusses the risks involved in nourishing students' spiritual development, maintains that teachers must simultaneously cultivate their own spiritual growth, discusses ways to work with parents, and provides suggestions for working with students who refuse to engage or who sabotage others' involvement.
