A Generative Model of an Interlanguage System.
Miller, Stephanie
A proposed model for an interim grammar between a first and second language, an autonomous rule-governed system based on the Extended Standard Theory, is presented and discussed, focusing on the motivations for choosing a generative model and the determination of structure for an interlanguage system, and using a comparison of the auxiliary system in French and English and the rules of clitic placement in French as examples. It is proposed that the second language learner would use the model to create utterances in the target language, and that the structure of the interlanguage is revealed by the systematic errors of the second language learner, reflecting the mechanism that generates them. The report discusses the role of core or universal grammar and markedness in interlanguage, language as a system, and related neurolinguistic evidence, and proceeds to a detailed examination of the French and English examples mentioned. A four-page bibliography is included. (MSE)
