This dissertation is part of a study that explains and evaluates a high interest curriculum in the basic communication areas of reading, writing, and speaking. The curriculum is based on the theories that the vital communication skills are more effectively taught when they are unified in reinforcing activities, and that literature in the curriculum can be presented from the basis of a unifying theory. Reading, writing, and speaking are presented in a framework that provides for reinforcement of students' best efforts in order to enhance their self-image and to increase motivation. The section of the dissertation describing the core curriculum details such materials as films, games, records, and newspaper stories that are thematically integrated with romantic literature. A lengthy evaluative chapter includes reactions from students, faculty, directors and course coordinators. It also includes interpretation of available test data. It is concluded that the thematic unity of the core curriculum and the integration of communication areas are successful and should be continued in Upward Bound. (Author/TS)
