A study of student interest was carried out focusing on current reading and media interests of high school boys as compared with those of high school girls and identifying changes in those interests since Paul Witty conducted similar research 20 years earlier. The sample randomly selected 300 ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students from a public school district comparable to the districts used in the earlier study. It was found that compared to the earlier study, high school students now report they spend less time reading, fewer use the public library, there is more interest in fiction, a greater preference for contemporary novels and lesser preference for classics, a stronger interest among boys for sports magazines, and more time is spent televiewing and listening to the radio. It was also found that boys prefer stories involving action and adventure while girls prefer romance, humor, and mystery; girls prefer "Seventeen" magazine while boys enjoy sports magazines as well as adult and mechanics magazines; more boys than girls read the newspapers and they prefer sports, comics, and feature stories, in that order, while girls choose comics, feature stories, and the entertainment section, in that order; and boys and girls both prefer comedy television shows.
