Teaching "Law and Education" Outside the Law School.
Simpson, Robert J., Ed.
A symposium discussion is presented on the topic, "Teaching 'Law and Education' Outside the Law School." The participants were: Walter J. McCann of Harvard Graduate School of Education; E. Edmund Reutter, Jr., of Teachers College of Columbia University; Robert J. Simpson of University of Miami Center for Policy and Law in Education; Tyll Van Geel of the University of Rochester College of Education, and Alan Miles Ruben (Moderator) of Cleveland State University College of Law. The discussion addresses courses involving law in education, or the legal aspects of education. It is suggested that it is increasingly important to teach educators about legal rights and responsibilities. Graduate versus undergraduate course offerings and the content of law and education courses are discussed. Service opportunities of a center for educational policy and law are outlined, and problems of materials and methodology in teaching law and education courses, and the particular problems in teaching at the higher education level are discussed. Summary statements by the participants and questions from the audience are included. (SW)
