The research design is presented for an evaluation of a computer based career guidance program, SIGI (System of Interactive Guidance and Information), designed by Educational Testing Service to assist community college students in improving their ability to make career decisions. The plan described is for the Pasadena City College field test--a pilot study during 1974-75 and the expanded study in 1975-76. The outline of the design covers (1) procedures (recruitment of students, assignment to experimental and control groups, and pre-post testing and counseling; (2) the sample (150 students per group in the pilot test and 250 per group in the expanded study); (3) collection and treatment of data (student and counselor questionnaires and nonparametric statistical analyses); (4) criteria to be measured (28 specific criteria to be measured, e.g., "extent of success in college program as measured by grade point average," and "degree of change in students' sureness in choice of college program and occupation as measured by self ratings."; and (5) assumptions and limitations. In addition to the design outline, the following background materials are presented: a description of SIGI, notes on dissemination of information regarding the system, a suggested letter and information sheet for recruitment of participants, description of criteria measures and other areas to be investigated, discussion of data analyses, and copies of the registration form for SIGI applicants and three student and one counselor questionnaire to be used in the study.
