Evaluating Teaching in Higher Education. A Collection of Conference Papers.

Some of the difficult problems related to introducing greater accountability for teaching were assessed and tentative policies considered at a British conference on higher education held in April 1975. R.C. Tress, Peter Kennedy, R. Rickett, Tom Driver, Marcus Merriman, and Alastair Stewart are the authors of the first set of papers entitled "National Policy on Evaluation." The second section, "The Theory and Practice of Evaluation" contains the following contributions: "The Evaluation of Teaching in Higher Education," by Roy Cox; "Evaluation of Teaching and the Institutional Context," by Carolyn Miller; "The Quality of Course Materials," by Michael Macdonald-Ross; "Is it Possible to Assess Teaching?" by Lewis Elton; "Student Evaluation of Teaching," by Colin Flood Page; "The Politics of Teacher Evaluation and Improvement: A Look at the United States," by Robert L. Woodbury; and "The Evaluation of Teaching--Some Comments," by Alex Main. The final section, "Case Studies," includes: "Student Perceptions of BSc Prelims. at Sussex" by Michael Eraut; "Report on a Study of Staff Perceptions of Promotion Procedures and the Role of the University Teacher," by Richard Startup; "Student Evaluation of Teaching at North East London Polytechnic," by Philip S. Bradbury and Paul Ramsden; and "Evaluation Studies of Six Courses in Geography, Electrical Engineering and Physics," by P.J. Black and R.J.D. Rutherford. (JMD)
