Interview with Virginia Richardson
Miletta, Alexandra
New Educator, v1 n1 p19-25 Feb 2005
Virginia Richardson, professor and former chair of Educational Studies at the University of Michigan, has recently been recognized for her contributions to teacher education with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE). She has previously served as Vice President of Division K for the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and is the editor of the fourth edition of the "Handbook of Research on Teaching." During her recent residency as a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, she has been contributing to the Initiative on the Doctorate and the Delta Teacher Education Project. I was Professor Richardson's advisee at the University of Michigan and interviewed her in December 2003 for the premiere issue of "The New Educator." I asked her for her frank opinions on the impact of teacher education on constructivist approaches to teaching, the critical gaps in research on teaching, especially with regard to teacher educators, and the challenges and opportunities associated with preparing teachers for urban school settings.
