Estimating Criminal Justice System Costs and Cost-Savings Benefits of Day Reporting Centers
Craddock, Amy
Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, v39 n4 p69-98 2004
This paper reports on the net cost-savings benefits (loss) to the criminal justice system of one rural and one urban day reporting center, both of which serve high risk/high need probationers. It also discusses issues of conducting criminal justice system cost studies of community corrections programs. The average DRC participant in the rural program produced a potential cost-savings benefit to the criminal justice system during the 12-month follow-up period. In the urban county, probation officers primarily referred probationers to the DRC as an alternative to revocation. This program yields a potential net loss to the system. Without access to the DRC, however, most of these individuals would have been incarcerated and costs to the system would have been much higher. (Contains 5 tables.)
