Assessing General Education Outcomes
Yin, Alexander C.; Volkwein, J. Fredericks
New Directions for Institutional Research, nS1 spec iss p79-100 Aut 2010
In both purpose and practice, general education in American higher education has experienced several recurring debates and national revivals. In a world with constantly evolving technology, students need a strong general education to be flexible and adaptable to the changes of the world. General education is an important component and requirement of a student's education; thus, institutional researchers ought to understand its dynamics. This chapter first examines and compares the definitions of general education published by the Association of American Colleges and Universities and the six regional accrediting agencies. The authors then describe issues and challenges surrounding general education assessment and conclude by identifying general education assessment methods, measures, and instruments.
