Sport in Higher Education.
Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals of the Universities of the United Kingdom, London.
This publication discusses the future of university sport development in the United Kingdom in response to a report of the Department for National Heritage calling for revitalization of British sport at all levels. This report integrates findings and recommendations of a special task force, a government working party, and consultation papers of the Sports Council of Great Britain in the following areas: (1) sports provision and facilities; (2) safety in sport; (3) raising the profile of sport; (4) sports scholarships; (5) the British Academy of Sport; and (6) the Lottery Sports Fund revenue grants. Among task force recommendations in these areas are: a national database of sports facilities, available online; recognition that responsibility for safety is a joint one involving the individual students, the sports clubs, the student union, and parent institution; increased publicity concerning the scope of available facilities and student achievements, and participation by the local community in the institution's sports programs; changes in the way Sports Lottery money may be distributed; a sophisticated database of up-to-date information; and launching of four Lottery Sports Funds programs. Community use of facilities, elite performers and student union involvement are also discussed. Appendices provide information about the survey method used for the report, a guide to sports safety, sports scholarships, development of a British Academy of Sport, and the Lottery Sports Fund.
