Longitudinal data from the Philippine Migration Survey show that both outmigrants from and return migrants to rural communities had lower occupational prestige scores than nonmigrants. Although rural outmigrants were positively selected on socioeconomic characteristics compared to nonmigrants, their prior farming and fishing experiences did not prepare them for the urban labor market.
