Tips for a Successful Leadership Retreat
Bonstingl, John Jay
School Administrator, v62 n8 p50 Sep 2005
This article focuses on planning a retreat for board, leadership team, or community and business partners. The author provides 10 suggestions for effective retreat planning: (1) Plan one's retreat with a clear purpose in mind; (2) Make retreat more relevant; (3) Build on current and past successes; (4) Make sure the right people are invited and focus on results; (5) Choose a conducive environment; (6) Establish a cell-free zone; (7) Focus on policies and processes, not personalities; (8) Make relevant data the basis of your work; (9) Provide objective facilitation; and (10) Allow for food, fun and fellowship. The author concludes that leaders should build in time for everyone to network and enjoy each other's company away from the business at hand. Taking them away for a sports outing, cookout or concert will allow them to get to know each other on a personal level in a relaxed setting. Bonding opportunities are often the most valuable, long-lasting benefits of a good leadership retreat.
