Storying Selves in Conventional and Creative Resumes
Harter, Lynn M.; Quinlan, Margaret M.
Communication Teacher, v22 n3 p76-79 Jul 2008
This article presents an activity in which students use narrative theory as a conceptual canvas for understanding resumes as autobiographical performances shaped by social and material forces. By asking students to story their lives in both conventional and creative resumes, this assignment invites students to produce autobiographical discourse for employment interview contexts while also giving them license to exercise their imagination by (re)storying self in alternative formats. Viewed aesthetically, the poetic mandate of resumes is what Burke identifies as "the element of self-expression in all human activities." Importantly, no story sits alone--each performance derives its meaning in part from its relationship to other texts. For example, students' choices about what to include in their resumes, how to organize information, and aesthetic layout embody self even as they reflect the societal context from which selves emerge. Courses: Senior Capstone; Performance Studies; Storytelling; Business and Professional Communication; Interviewing. (References and Suggested Readings included. Contains 1 note.)
