"Road Tripping Down the Digital Preservation Highway" follows the continuing adventures of Peter Palmer, erstwhile librarian at Bellaluna University and manager of the library's and University's digital content, as he journeys down the Digital Preservation Highway. Palmer's problem this month was somewhat more philosophical. As manager of the Bellaluna University digital repository, Peter was responsible for appraising digital content for value and determining what treatment it would receive. Various information about formats and sustainability gave Peter a sense that in the case of creating sustainable file formats, following the crowd was the best course of action. With normalization a normal part of his digital program, Peter could now concentrate on what to normalize. Though there were tools and services available that automatically normalized certain data types, Peter discovered that this area of digital preservation was still maturing. Peter again decided that the state of the art in 2011 for a generalized repository was to provide browser-ready access derivatives where possible, maintain server-side delivery applications for audio and video, and deliver the bitstream files for everything else.
