If It's Resonance, What is Resonating?
Kerber, Robert C.
Journal of Chemical Education, v83 n2 p223 Feb 2006
The phenomenon under the name "resonance," which, is based on the mathematical analogy between mechanical resonance and the behavior of wave functions in quantum mechanical exchange phenomena was described. The resonating system does not have a structure intermediate between those involved in the resonance, but instead a structure which is further changed by the resonance stabilization.
