Family-Friendly Art
Williams, Patterson; Garcia, Maria
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v103 n8 p23 Apr 2004
In the late 1980s, the Denver Art Museum initiated efforts to make the museum a destination for families. From 1997 to 2001, with a generous grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts, these efforts came to fruition. From the moment they walk through the doors, families' needs are anticipated. For example, they can pick up a welcoming brochure, Free Things for Kids to Do Today, from the ticket counter. The double-sided foldout featuring Seymour, the family program's mascot monkey, spells out what is available. The Try This section encourages kids to go on a hunt through the museum to find images of Seymour, who is always posted near fun stuff for families. By enticing families with young children, who make up about forty percent of the Denver metropolitan community, the museum can tap into a reservoir of potential visitors.
