Emotional Skills-Building Curriculum
Pickover, Sheri
Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling, v31 n1 p52-58 Oct 2010
Current anger management programs use a cognitive behavior perspective; however, research also links anger control to developmental deficits such as attachment insecurity and emotional regulation. This article previews the Emotional Skills-Building Curriculum (ESBC), a 13-week treatment program designed to treat individuals who are referred for "anger management" through the lens of a developmental deficit. The ESBC treatment program is currently in use at a no-cost mental health clinic in Detroit, Michigan. Clients receiving this treatment model are referred for domestic violence or anger management counseling through local district courts. Most clients are first-time misdemeanor offenders, although this program has also been used with some chronic offenders as well. The ESBC treatment program is currently the target of a pretest-posttest study to determine if clients demonstrate increased control, decreased anger thoughts, and increased moral and global self-esteem.
