Behavioral Strategies for Psychological Intervention.
Iowa State Dept. of Public Instruction, Des Moines. Div. of Pupil Personnel Services.
Ten papers contributed by school psychologists or university educators working with school psychology programs review psychological theory and research on behavioral strategies for psychological intervention. Following an overview on the effective use of behavior modification in the school, nine behavior change methods are examined in terms of research, underlying theoretical principles, guidelines for the application of the procedures, and illustrative case examples. The following methods are considered: the Premack Principle (making a higher probability event contingent on the performance of a lower probability behavior), differential reinforcement of low rates, modeling-based interventions, precision teaching, differential reinforcement of other behavior; satiation, negative practice and overcorrection; timeout; punishment; and extinction.
