Deregulating Low-Risk Research
Shamoo, Adil E.
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n48 pB16 Aug 2007
In the past few decades, with the explosion of biotechnology and the aging of the population, the use of human subjects in research has increased significantly. The United States has done much to protect human research subjects, and no one can deny the importance of keeping them safe. But at the same time, researchers whose work poses no threat to humans have been handicapped. In this article, the author talks about deregulating low-risk research. He argues that low-risk research should be exempt from federal regulation unless the studies could result in a breach of subjects' privacy or disclosures that could pose unreasonable risks to subjects.
