When a child is sick, parents want answers. They want to know what is wrong, what they can do, and how to get their child healthy--pronto. Regrettably, there are some puzzling illnesses affecting children that are surrounded by mystery. One of them is gastroesophageal reflux (GER), otherwise known as acid reflux--or "reflux" for short. Reflux usually strikes children in the first month after birth--a time when parents are just starting to get their feet on the ground. It is estimated that of the approximately eight million babies born in the U.S. each year, as many as 20%, suffer from reflux, and babies who have developmental or neurological disabilities are more likely to suffer from gastroesophageal reflux than are babies who are neurologically normal.
